‘Reducing’ multiple pregnancies

The Daily Mail reports the inspiring story of Charlene who found herself unexpectedly pregnant with quadruplets.  Doctors recommended that she abort two of the babies (medically known as fetal reduction or selective reduction).

Although not often in the headlines, fetal reduction is sometimes used following IVF treatment in cases of multiple pregnancies. It is just one more reason why the life of the unborn child is so easily terminated, but it obviously seems particularly sad when this practice is associated with assisted reproduction.
