Petition against three-parent embryos

The Secretary of State for Health in the United Kingdom is being petitioned to block moves to allow germline genetic modification of human embryos and the creation of three-parent children.

The petition, launched through Citizen Go, notes: "Highly controversial proposals currently before the United Kingdom's Parliament would permit combining in vitro germline genetic material from two maternal sources in order to create a new kind of human embryo." People everywhere can sign, not just those in the UK.

The supporting webpage gives reasons for the campaigners' objections including: "None of the proposed techniques represents a cure for mitochondrial disease which will continue to appear randomly at birth." There are also links to YouTube videos in which the case against the techniques is further made. We reproduce both below.
