Doctors at the British Medical Association’s Annual Representatives Meeting have voted against the legalisation of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia.
‘We understand that many doctors were unhappy with the neutral policy, which was passed by a narrow vote on the last day of the BMA’s 2005 Meeting after many members had already departed,’ said Julia Millington of the ProLife Alliance. ‘Today’s result reflects the strength of opposition to euthanasia within the medical profession.
‘Medical opposition to the legalisation of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia has been repeatedly affirmed in the policies adopted by various medical bodies, including the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Nurses and the General Medical Council. The neutral policy adopted last year was not only out of step with medical opinion but was also absurd. How can doctors possibly be neutral on the issue of physician-assisted suicide?
‘The opposition of the judiciary and the House of Lords is also clear. When will the pro-euthanasia lobby will see the writing on the wall?’
